Tonight’s DYNAMITE began with the Open Challenge for the TNT Dynamite Title!

“The American Nightmare” Cody (along with Nightmare Family head coach, “The Enforcer” Arn Anderson), stood in the ring awaiting to see who would answer the open challenge this week. After Justin Roberts finished his introduction of TNT Champ Cody, out walked…

18-year pro wrestling veteran Eddie Kingston, making his AEW Debut, to answer Cody’s open challenge! Kingston proposed that this week’s open challenge should have a No DQ stipulation, and Cody agreed!

As Justin Roberts began to introduce the challenger, Kingston attacked Cody from behind.

The fight quickly went to the outside of the ring, with Kingston and Cody brawling. Kingston gouged Cody’s eyes!

“This is a dangerous situation that Cody has put himself in,” said Jim Ross.

“And it’s a dangerous man that he is facing. Eddie Kingston, one of the toughest, one of the dirtiest fighters in the game, is now challenging for the TNT Championship,” added Excalibur.

Back in the ring, Kingston went for a single leg takedown on Cody and then started clubbing Cody with fists, employing some “street” ground-and-pound into his strategy. Kingston went for a spinning back fist but Cody dodged it. Cody blasted Kingston with the Disaster Kick!

Kingston, in a fog, stumbled to the outside of the ring to clear the cobwebs after Cody’s Disaster Kick. Cody wasted no time and followed up with a tope suicida onto Kingston!

“Cody’s got his work cut out for him but he is focused,” said Tony Schiavone.

Cody came off the top rope with a missile dropkick onto the challenger. Kingston was clutching his knee and went back outside the ring. Cody removed his weight belt and followed him.

“I think Kingston may have lured Cody to the outside,” said Excalibur.

Kingston booted Cody to the abdomen and snatched the weight belt from Cody. Kingston began whipping Cody’s back with the belt. There is no disqualification in this match after all, so Kingston is using that to his advantage.

“Kingston is whipping Cody like a government mule here,” said Jim Ross.

“Kingston still trying to get his knee back in place,” said Excalibur.

Kingston removed the padding on the outside, exposing the concrete floor! Kingston approached Cody to place him in a piledriver, perhaps, but Cody powered out and backdropped Kingston onto the concrete floor! Cody was driving his fists into Kingston’s forehead.

“Cody showing great aggression here. Tenacity! Toughness!” noted Jim Ross.

The competitors went back into the ring and Kingston was still favoring his injured knee. He hit a backdrop driver on Cody, planting him right on the back of his head.

“That’s that influence of that All Japan Pro-Wrestling style, one of the pillars that Kingston counts as a motivator for getting into the pro wrestling business,” said Excalibur.

Kingston was hitting Cody with hard body shots in the corner but Cody fought back until Kingston dropped Cody to the mat with another stiff shot. Kingston drove the sole of his boot into Cody’s jaw. Kingston was yelling at Cody: “Stay down!”

Cody went after Kingston’s left knee but Kingston turned Cody inside out with a brutal clothesline! Kingston applied a Stretch Plum submission onto Cody. “The American Nightmare” escaped but Kingston took him right back down with a snap mare takeover. Kingston delivered wicked kicks to Cody’s spine. Cody got back to his feet but Kingston poked him in the eyes.

Kingston went for another suplex but Cody floated over the top and caved Kingston’s foundation with a chop block to his tweaked knee! Cody was fired up and sent Kingston headfirst into the turnbuckle pad! Cody tried an Irish whip on Kingston but Kingston’s leg buckled and he crumped to the mat. Cody approached Kingston to take advantage of the situation but Kingston turned and met Cody with a low blow.

“A desperate man pushed to his limit will do just about anything, and we’re seeing that with Eddie Kingston,” said Excalibur.

Kingston DDT’ed Cody on the crown of his skull!

Tony Schiavone noted that Kingston once served as the manager for Santana and Ortiz, as Kingston went to the outside of the ring and pulled a bag out from under the apron.

Kingston emptied the bag inside the ring, spilling the contents across the mat. The bag had been full of thumbtacks! Kingston headbutted Cody between the eyes, growling “Fight me!”

Kingston picked up Cody on his shoulder, carrying him towards the thumbtacks, but Cody escaped and dropkicked Kingston’s knee! Cody attempted to put Kingston in a hold, but Kingston countered and powerbombed Cody right into the thumbtacks!

“Cody is bleeding from the mouth, he’s got thumbtacks in his arm and lower back. Look at that! Can you imagine the pain?!” said Jim Ross.

Kingston backdropped Cody again but Cody popped up, full of adrenaline, and clotheslined Kingston! Cody saw an opportunity for the figure four, but Kingston slapped him in the face. Cody answered with open palm strikes of his own, and then a straight right hand to Kingston! Cody had enough and wrapped up Kingston’s legs in the figure four! After Cody bridged up, Kingston had no choice but to tap!

“Cody has been a fighting champion but this may have been his toughest test yet. That knee injury to Eddie Kingston proved to be a crucial turning point in this match,” noted Excalibur.

The inaugural TNT Champion “The American Nightmare” Cody came down to the ring to be interviewed by Tony Schiavone!

“Tony do you know why Tom Brady is my favorite quarterback? Tom Brady was not first picked. Yet his legacy endured. I am the very first champion of America’s greatest network. If you think my story is one of favoritism or nepotism, think again.

“I paid my dues and grew up right in front of you. My mother taught me everything I need to know about grit. You can have all the talent in the world and you can shove it up your ass! If you stand next to me on the track, I will outwork you.

“If you are someone who is critical of me from bell to bell, watch what I do next. Watch the pace I set. I will stand here every week on TNT. This is an open challenge. It is my obligation to give you, the fans, my best. So, follow me: This is where the fun begins,” concluded Cody.

Tony Schiavone, Kenny Omega, and “The American Nightmare” Cody kicked off the show from the broadcast table, running down tonight’s card!

And the opening contest was “The American Nightmare” Cody vs. Jimmy Havoc!

Brandi Rhodes was the ring announcer tonight! She gave Cody a kiss as he entered the ring.

Havoc got Cody down with some leg sweeps, and an arm drag. Cody used his bulk and brawn to push Havoc into the corner, but Havoc rolled through for a near fall.

“I think the more this match becomes a mat-based contest, the more it favors Cody,” said Kenny Omega.

Cody hit a cutter off the ropes, and then went for a figure four leg-lock. Havoc poked Cody’s eyes to break the hold. Cody knocked Havoc outside and then blasted him with a tope suicida! They brawled on the outside, and this style favored Havoc.

Jimmy Havoc suplexed Cody into the turnbuckle, wrenching Cody’s legs on the ropes in the process. Havoc stomped on Cody’s hands and right elbow.

Cody went back to the entrance tunnel, ran down the ramp, and used a running lariat on Jimmy Havoc…”shades of the Great Muta!” said Tony Schiavone.

Cody attempted a cutter but was caught in an arm bar by Havoc! Cody rolled to the ropes, and Havoc took him down with a clothesline. Jimmy Havoc was laying in the shots in the corner, but Cody put the brakes on it. Down to the mat they crashed as Cody gave Havoc a reverse suplex! Cody spiked Havoc with two CrossRhodes for the victory via pin fall!

Jake “the Snake” Roberts had a message for Cody, played over the big screen. Cody watched from inside the ring.

“Lance Archer is chomping at the bit just to get in the ring with somebody from All Elite Wrestling,” Jake said. “Here I am, the best mind that wrestling’s ever had, yet not a phone call when All Elite Wrestling started last year. And not a phone call for Lance Archer, who was in Japan, romping and stomping. Because you guys were afraid. Bring your people. Bring Arn Anderson. Bring all of ‘em. Give us something to sign that says you, Cody, will meet us, one time. One time! That’s all I’m asking for Cody. What are you going to do? It’s up to you, Cody. Trust me.”

Cody joined Tony Schiavone at the broadcast table. Tony asked Cody about Jake’s challenge. “I’m aware of Lance Archer’s work in Japan, but he doesn’t have a body of work here. I don’t want to be a whiny babyface so Lance can debut next week. Spoiler!” replied Cody.

Le Champion Chris Jericho and Matt Hardy met face to face inside an AEW ring for the first time!

“Those arrogant S.O.B.’s got Matt Hardy to pledge his allegiance to The Elite last week. Come down to the ring Matt Hardy.”

Vanguard 1 flew down to the ring instead. Jericho said Vanguard 1 was a piece of trash. And then Jericho asked the drone to join The Inner Circle. Vanguard 1 flew away and it outraged Jericho.

Matt Hardy was standing at the top of the arena, and then in the blink of an eye, he was teleporting to different parts of the arena, until finally appearing ringside.

“Maker of pain, you knew I’d come!” said Matt Hardy.

“How did you do that?” asked Jericho.

“Because I am magic!” replied Matt Hardy.

“When you show up in AEW, you want to align yourself with me, not with the arrogant Elite,” said Jericho.

“No, I owe the Bucks of Youth a debt, because they helped resurrect me. And AEW represents freedom. It is my Arcadia. And I cannot allow you and The Inner Circle to run roughshod on AEW!” said Hardy.

“I’m gonna give you another shot to join The Inner Circle.”

“I am Damascus. And Damascus is over 3,000 years old,” said Hardy.

“Then you must be extremely wise. Outside you look very different. But inside you’re the same Matt Hardy that I’ve known for 25 years. Always living in the shadow. The shadow of your brother, the shadow of bad booking, and now the shadow of Le Champion. I’m gonna ask you one more time: are you Inner Circle or are you Elite?” asked Jericho.

“Delete! Delete! Delete! Delete!” shouted Matt Hardy.

Hardy continued: “Take off your sunglasses because I want you to take a good look at the entity that will delete you and The Inner Circle!”

Jericho slapped Hardy, but Hardy punched back, knocking Jericho to the mat!

Sammy G. jumped Hardy from behind. Kenny Omega and Cody ran down to help Matt Hardy, swinging steel chairs at Sammy and Le Champion!

Cody opened up the program standing alone in the ring with a microphone. The arena was dark and there was a spotlight shining on him.

“As human beings we need to stand together, and for many of us that means we have to stand at a distance. I refuse to live in a prison of fear. I feel alive and I hope you feel alive.

“Matt Jackson I know you are listening. I think you’re a tag team master. You need to put your anger aside. And I am tired of putting over “Hangman” Page. I need you to get over it—be the difference maker, be the reason we win at ‘Blood & Guts.’

“And then there’s Kenny Omega. We don’t always like each other, and that’s ok, this isn’t a wedding. It’s ‘Blood & Guts.’ I need you. But I need the real Kenny Omega—the “Best Bout Machine.” In short…I need the Elite to be…the Elite.”

Kenny Omega and Matt Jackson joined Cody in the ring.

Kenny said, “Here we are, just friends talking amongst friends. The entire world is falling part around us. If it’s up to me, I want to go out the way we came in, and that’s as the Elite!”

“I love the whole call to action for the Elite,” said Matt Jackson. “You saw what the Inner Circle did to my brother Nick. He’s out indefinitely. He couldn’t even get on a plane because of what they did to them. Where’s Adam Page?”

Adam Page walked out onto the ramp from the backstage area.

“We’re asking you,” said Matt Jackson, “will you stand with us?”

Page raised his glass and nodded in the affirmative.

Kenny looked into the camera and said, “Everybody needs some positivity so all we can do is give you the best possible show. So hit the lights. Hit the pyro. And let’s start DYNAMITE!”

The Inner Circle (“Big Hurt” Jake Hager, Santana and Ortiz, accompanied by “The Spanish God” Sammy Guevara) vs. The Elite (“The American Nightmare” Cody, accompanied by Arn Anderson, Matt Jackson, and “Hangman” Adam Page, with Kenny Omega at his side)—with the winning team earning the advantage at “Blood & Guts!”

Le Champion Chris Jericho joined the broadcast team for this match.

Santana blindsided Cody at the start of the bout. Cody countered with a powerslam! Matt and Cody utilized quick tags to cut the ring in half and work on Ortiz. Page ran in illegally with a boot to Ortiz.

Matt speared Santana, gaining a bit of revenge for his brother Nick Jackson, who wasn’t medically cleared to be at the event after last week’s brutal assault.

Page got the tag and followed through with a clothesline to Santana.

“You can’t go into a match with the Inner Circle with any animosity amongst your own team, and they’re too stupid to realize that,” said Jericho about the Elite.

Hager handed Cody over to Ortiz for the stalled suplex. Santana whipped Cody into the guardrail. Jackson had seen enough and began nailing Ortiz with stiff shots to the head!

“Cody has got to try to get one of his partners from the Elite into the match-up,” said Taz.

“I don’t like him but I respect him,” added Jericho.

Hager started the ground and pound on Cody. Hager put the pressure on Cody, who was trying to reach for his corner and a tag. Hager rammed Cody into the turnbuckles of the Inner Circle’s corner!

Cody rallied back with the Cross-Rhodes on Ortiz! Cody began crawling to his corner, but Hager tagged in and tried to stop him. Cody flipped Hager over the top rope!

“Hangman” was tagged in finally and cleaned house! He scooped up Santana with the fall away slam, and then went over the top rope onto Hager! Cody connected with a tope suicida onto Ortiz! Cody went after MJF at ringside, but Wardlow grabbed him by the throat. “Nightmare Family” head coach Arn Anderson hit Wardlow with his clipboard!

Back in the ring, Page and Jackson suplexed Hager! Jackson had Santana up and called for the IndyTaker to Page, but Jackson was rolled up after Page was pulled from the ring apron! The Inner Circle won the match and the advantage in “Blood & Guts”!

Chris Jericho took a microphone and celebrated with the Inner Circle at the top of the ramp, rubbing the victory into the face of the Elite. Jericho said at “Blood & Guts,” the Inner Circle would have the Elite outnumbered, since Nick Jackson was out indefinitely with an injury suffered at the hands of the Inner Circle.

There was a loud buzzing, and down came a drone, landing in the center of the ring!

Matt Jackson said he had called in a favor to help the Elite.

Piano music began to play, and there, standing in the balcony of the arena, was MATT HARDY!

“The American Nightmare” Cody, in his business attire, came down to the ring next!

“Cody has taken over the arena! They love this kid. This is genuine love of an athlete. Because they believe in him!” said Jim Ross.

“I don’t know if I want to broach the subject of what it means personally to lose to MJF. But I can tell you professionally what it means. But the only way I’d be comfortable with it at all is if MJF comes out here right now, looks me in the eye, and tells me he beat me fair and square,” said Cody.

Instead of MJF, it was Jake “the Snake” Roberts who came out to the ring!

“I hate the spoil the party. But damn, man, I got tired of listening to you cry. I never cried over one match in my career,” said Roberts. “Don’t you understand you got your ass kicked? MJF handed it right to you. But that’s not why I’m here.

“I’m not here to praise you. I’m here to slay you. The only reason I’m here is because the dark side will be coming to AEW, and once our roots have taken hold, it’ll be like a phoenix rising from the ashes.

“It’s been 20 years for me Cody, to get clean, to get right. By God, I’ve earned it! And if you think for one minute, that I’m going to be a nice boy and play right, my man you’ve got another thing coming. I will be on the outside of the ring when my client faces you, and you can bring that one-trick pony Arn Anderson with you. Oh Caesar, you see I’m not in AEW to take the whole pie—just your share, Cody.

“A wise man once told me, ‘You never ever turn your back on someone who you respect or who you’re afraid of…’” and Jake “the Snake” Roberts proceeded to turn away from Cody and exit the ring.

QT Marshall (accompanied by Brandi Rhodes and “The Natural” Dustin Rhodes) vs. the Inner Circle’s “Big Hurt” Jake Hager (with Santana & Ortiz at ringside)!

Hager quickly wrestled QT to the mat. QT tried jumping off the middle rope and Hager hit him with a running shoulder. Dustin Rhodes paced outside the ring. The fans chanted for QT as he tried to fight back with fists to Hager’s midsection.

Hager went for the Vader Bomb but QT got the boots up, and then followed up with some explosive right hands. QT attempted a swinging DDT but Hager tossed him across the ring and locked in the standing arm triangle to put QT to sleep!

Dustin Rhodes ran in to break up Hager’s hold. Santana, Ortiz and Hager triple-teamed Dustin Rhodes until Cody ran down to help Dustin and QT! Cody was taking care of business until he was hit from behind. Santana, Ortiz and Hager were hammering Cody but then Matt Jackson joined the fray to help!

Matt Jackson superkicked Ortiz and Santana! He stood toe-to-toe with Jake Hager, punching him down to one knee! Jackson ran into the ropes but Hager kneed him.

“Hangman” Page slowly strolled out with a drink in hand. “Hangman” put down his beer in the corner and started clobbering Santana and Ortiz, then used the Buckshot Lariat to pounce Hager.

“Hangman” Page gave a middle finger to Matt Jackson and then left to grab some beers from the ringside fans.

Tonight’s main event—and for the first time ever in the history of the promotion—a steel cage match! It was “The American Nightmare” Cody vs. MJF’s bodyguard, Wardlow, in a steel cage!

The only way to win was by pin fall or submission. MJF accompanied Wardlow to the ring. Cody was out next, joined by Arn Anderson and Brandi Rhodes.

A high kick from Cody found its mark across Wardlow’s face, but Wardlow didn’t budge. He posed in front of Cody, trying to intimidate him. Cody dropped down to the mat and connected with an uppercut to Wardlow. Cody followed up with a Disaster Kick, but even this couldn’t take Wardlow off his feet.

Wardlow used a clothesline on Cody, and then tossed him like a lawn dart into the steel cage! MJF was barking orders at Wardlow from ringside. Wardlow power bombed Cody against the cage! He booted Cody, and began using the cage against Cody’s forehead, which was busted wide open.

“Wardlow is manhandling Cody. Cody is losing a lot of blood!” said Jim Ross.

Cody found the will to pick Wardlow off his feet and pancake him. Cody used a cutter on Wardlow! Cody was laying in shots to the head of Wardlow, but Wardlow used a low blow to halt Cody’s momentum.

Wardlow picked Cody up on his shoulders and used a spinning F-10 on Cody! Wardlow, arrogantly, did not attempt to go for the cover. Wardlow started raking Cody’s forehead across the steel cage. Then Cody was knocked headfirst against the cage door, popping it open with the momentum. Cody’s head was positioned just through the cage door, and Arn Anderson grabbed the door before MJF could slam it on Cody’s head. Instead, Arn swung the cage door in the other direction, nailing MJF with it!

Wardlow tried for a power bomb but Cody escaped. Cody rallied back and hit the monster with three clotheslines. Cody used a powerslam on Wardlow for a near fall. Cody climbed to the top rope but Wardlow caught him with a right hand, and then military pressed Cody against the steel cage! Wardlow hit a senton onto Cody for a two count!

“That was amazing for a man that size,” said Tony Schiavone.

MJF tossed the “DYNAMITE diamond ring” through the cage to Wardlow, but Cody countered with a low blow to Wardlow. MJF began to climb the cage from the outside, but Brandi Rhodes stopped him in his tracks by swinging a folding chair at MJF. Upset with Cody’s wife, MJF angrily approached Brandi. “Nightmare Family” head coach Arn Anderson stepped in and whipped MJF over the ringside barricade!

Cody connected with an uppercut and then the CrossRhodes for a two count onto Wardlow! Cody looked up, almost in a trance-like state, and scaled the cage. Cody climbed all the way to the top and hit a moonsault off the steel cage onto Wardlow for the three count! As a result of his victory, “the American Nightmare” Cody will be facing MJF at AEW REVOLUTION!

Be sure to watch next week live on February 26th, as AEW DYNAMITE will be broadcasting on TNT from the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena in Kansas City, MO! It’ll be the final show prior to the AEW REVOLUTION pay-per-view, being held on February 29th from Chicago!

MJF’s music started to play, and out strolled MJF with Wardlow. It was time for Cody’s ten lashes!

“The American Nightmare” Cody’s theme song played throughout the arena, and Cody came out to honor the stipulation that he accepted.

“A vicious and cruel woodshed awaits…he will keep his word,” said Jim Ross, as Cody took off his jacket and entered the ring. Cody proceeded to loosen his tie, and then removed his tie and shirt.

“Hold on, hold on, hold on. I don’t know, this is a really nice belt. Far too nice to touch you!” said MJF, as he pointed down at his leather belt. “I want your belt. Now!”

Cody tossed his belt to MJF and turned around, ready to receive his lashes. MJF was all smiles.

“It’s old school, man,” commented Jim Ross.

The Butcher and the Blade, Kip Sabian, and Sammy G. came out on the top of the ramp to witness the lashing.

Cody took two stiff lashes, and then a third, grimacing in pain. The third was enough to cause Cody to lunge forward and grab the ring ropes. Arn Anderson came down to the ring, and MJF said, “You can’t help him now, old man!”

The welts began popping up on Cody’s back. The fourth time MJF hit him with the belt caused Cody to drop to his knees, but Cody stood up for another.

Cody’s brother, Dustin Rhodes, ran down to the ring. Dustin offered to take the remaining lashes. “Unfortunately this is not how it works,” said MJF. “Get out of my ring and watch with everybody else,” he continued.

Two quick ones to the spine, and Cody was back on the mat, clenching his teeth. Now the Young Bucks were out, trying to console their friend. Cody rolled out of the ring, and the Bucks and Dustin Rhodes offered him words of encouragement. “You’re almost there,” said Dustin.

Cody was digging deep, gritting his teeth, and he manned up again in the center of the ring. He had three more to go. MJF hit him with the strap again, and Cody fell again. “Stay down!” screamed MJF.

Cody gave the middle finger to MJF. This time, Wardlow offered his services, and MJF handed the leather belt to Wardlow. A thunderous crack echoed throughout the arena as Wardlow whipped Cody, who collapsed to his feet, his back bleeding, covered in welts.

Brandi Rhodes, Cody’s wife, came down to the ring. “You’ve got one more. You can do this. I love you so much,” she said, as she grabbed his hand through the ring ropes. Cody turned around for number ten and got one right in the chest, but Cody did not quit! MJF finished it off with a low blow to Cody, before he and Wardlow retreated through the crowd!
